Abstract

A B S T R A C T
Under the Atabeg tradition of the Seljuk period, two Atabeg dynasties—known as the Greater and Lesser Lurs—emerged in the Lorestan region. The territory of the Greater Lurs underwent political and geographical reconfigurations until the rise of the Safavids, part of which became known as the “Bakhtiari Province.” The emergence of this province is significant for two reasons: firstly, historical sources on its formation are scarce, and secondly, during the Safavid era, it became one of the five major political provinces. This study employs historical description and analysis to investigate the historical conditions and factors behind its formation. Findings indicate that the Atabegs’ historical territory was divided into a core domain and additional holdings. During the Safavid period, the Bakhtiari Province, led by the Mirzadeh Astarki family, largely corresponded to the original domain of the Greater Lurs. The preservation of this core territory until the Safavid era was due to the Astarkis’ influence within the Atabeg administration. Their political maneuvers against the Atabegs and the appearance of Astarki leaders as rulers of the Bakhtiari Province in the early Safavid period, following a historical hiatus, reflect the continuity of local dynastic power. Moreover, under Khalil Khan during the reigns of Shah Safi and Shah Abbas II, their territory expanded, reflecting both the restoration and alignment with the broader domain of the Greater Lurs.
